Things are not always as they seem…

14 August 2024

As a recruiter we often find that clients have a bias against candidates who have held multiple roles, often at different companies, within a short amount of time.
It seems to unnerve people due to the assumption that a “jumpy” career must be due to a negative incident or character trait.
In reality, the last 5 years have seen an extremely volatile employment market. In property and construction alone many businesses have folded, or had to implement large budget cuts, leaving employees no choice but to find work elsewhere.
It’s also common to find that the next step in the candidates career path was not available at their current company and therefore a move was inevitable.

The current state of the market for the property and construction sectors can be seen in the examples below.

People who have changed roles frequently in a short period of time are often more resilient and adaptable than most – they know their value but are ready to learn and want to be challenged.

Old habits die hard, but it’s worth being open minded when trying to attract top talent. Review the types of roles and experience as a whole rather than in isolation over short periods of time.
